Results and effectiveness

Each Dr. Pen device is equipped with a cartridge with tiny needles. When you turn on your device and place it on the treatment area, the needles in the cartridge will pulsate and glide over the skin to penetrate the upper layers, creating deliberate trauma and micro-injuries. These injuries trigger a healing response from the body, which responds by producing collagen and elastin fibers. Over time, the skin is rejuvenated, the appearance of fine lines, scars, hyperpigmentation, and sagging skin is reduced, and your overall texture and tone are brightened and improved. To learn more about how microneedling works, read here .

The level of discomfort you experience will depend on the length of the needle you choose to use, as well as whether or not you apply a numbing cream. The shorter the needle length, the less discomfort you will feel. If you have sensitive skin, you can purchase an over-the-counter numbing cream at any pharmacy. Apply about ⅓ to ½ of the tube to the area to be treated, leave it on for 20 minutes, then carefully remove the cream. Once the cream is removed, clean the skin again. This helps prevent the numbing cream from entering the microchannels.

It is recommended to apply a numbing cream before microneedling for lengths longer than 1 mm. Applying a serum such as hyaluronic acid will also help lubricate your skin and may alleviate some of the discomfort during the microneedling process. Using a device with a finer needle gauge (such as the M8 and A7), as well as a higher speed level, can also reduce some of the discomfort.

Microneedling can treat a range of conditions, some of the most common include; mild to moderate acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, uneven skin tone (hyperpigmentation), uneven skin texture, dullness, and stretch marks. To better understand which conditions each Dr Pen model can treat, please read the product description for each model, as each model targets different concerns and has unique characteristics.

You can perform LED light therapy treatment for 15-20 minutes after microneedling treatment. It is safe to use LED light right after microneedling. However, if you feel your skin is really sensitive after microneedling, please wait 24-48 hours before using LED light treatment.

Protocol and usage

Generally, 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart are needed to see a noticeable improvement. Some studies suggest 4 to 8 sessions for scars.

The exact number depends on the indication, the depth, and the individual response.

For cosmetic purposes, depths typically range from 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm. For deeper scars, depths of up to 2.0 mm can be used in professional settings.

At home, you must stay below 0.5 mm, and ensure sterility.

Yes, there are devices for home use, but:

  • They have shorter needles (<0.5 mm)
  • The risk of infection or injury is higher if hygiene rules are not followed.
  • The results are generally less than those of professional treatment.

Studies emphasize the importance of sterilization, even for home use.

Safety and contraindications

Yes, it has been shown to be safe for darker skin tones, unlike some lasers. The study by Singh & Yadav confirms this.

However, there are contraindications (see below).

Normal reactions: redness, slight swelling, tingling, some minor bleeding. These symptoms usually disappear within 24–72 hours.

Rare effects: infection (if non-sterile equipment is used), hypertrophic or keloid scarring (in at-risk individuals), post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. A systematic review by A. Gowda (2021) shows that serious effects are very rare.

Among the contraindications:

  • Infectious active skin disease (e.g., active herpes, severe inflammatory acne)
  • Skin with impaired healing (e.g., severe leukoderma, ongoing alopecia areata)
  • Recent use of medication that allows for sensitive skin (e.g., isotretinoin < 6 months)
  • Pregnancy (caution and consultation required)
  • Unstable anticoagulant therapy

It is essential to consult a professional before treatment.

Maintenance and results

After treatment:

  • Apply soothing serums, growth factors, or hyaluronic acid.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure for 48 hours and apply SPF 50+
  • Do not use heavy makeup for 24 hours
  • Do not exfoliate or peel for at least 1 week
  • Follow the recommendations of the beautician or dermatologist

The first improvements often appear after 4 to 6 weeks. The optimal effect is seen after 3 to 6 sessions .

To maintain the results, a maintenance session is recommended every 6 to 12 months.
